Phew! Over 1.3 million reviews, 7,500 hotels, 22 countries and 140 review sites later, ReviewPro’s Global Hotel Review Benchmark Q1 2022 report is now available for download.

After slowing to a trickle during the pandemic, online reviews are back! This provides a treasure trove of review data to help hoteliers understand changing guest behaviour and preferences and fast-track recovery in the coming months and years.

Here are a few highlights from the report:

  • Global review volume was up 46.5% in Q1 2022 over Q1 2021.
  • Average review scores decreased by 0.7 points during the same period to 84.6%. Still respectable considering labour shortages and other challenges hoteliers are facing this year.
  • Booking.com has gained massive market share over the years, reaching 39.2% of total reviews in Q1 2022. The second highest proportion went to Google, at 29.6%. Together, these review powerhouses represented almost 70% of reviews worldwide.
  • In third place was Tripadvisor with 10.1% of total reviews. But quantity doesn’t necessarily mean quality. Most reviews on Booking.com and Google are ratings only or provide only short snippets of feedback, whereas Tripadvisor reviews provide detailed feedback, departmental ratings, and property rankings by destination, making it a continued valuable source for both hoteliers and guests.
  • Hoteliers responded to 61.2% of respondable reviews in Q1 2022 — a pretty impressive number. However, 63.5% of positive reviews received a response compared to only 50.6% of negative reviews. What happened to prioritizing negative reviews? Then again, I remember back in 2010 when the response rate to negative reviews on Tripadvisor was only 4%!

The report contains loads of insights at the global level as well as by star rating and region, to help hoteliers around the world benchmark performance.

As much as I love sinking my teeth into a big project like this, as the ReviewPro team and I sifted through hundreds of tables and thousands of data points, at times I feared we had bitten off far more than we could chew. But that’s behind us, and the results speak for themselves. Now we have a few weeks to recover before we start prepping the Q2 report. Yes, this report will be issued quarterly! 😬
